CCAG marks the passing of esteemed colleague Bob Corell, the globally renowned climate scientist and glaciologist whose pioneering work and unwavering commitment to climate action inspired us all.

Bob passed away on 16 January 2024, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of knowledge and determination to create a sustainable future for humanity.

Sir David King said:

“It’s with great sadness that I must report the death of our wonderful CCAG colleague Bob Corell. Bob died in hospital, after a fall, late on Thursday 16 January having been working right up to the moment he was taken ill. I’m told he celebrated in some style his 90th birthday at a big event in November last year.

"A globally leading climate scientist and glaciologist with a keen intelligence and a big heart, Bob was one of the first people I thought of when we created the Climate Crisis Advisory Group and he provided us with wonderfully astute contributions throughout his time with us. His analysis of the influence of the loss of Arctic summer ice on the extreme meandering of the Jet Stream and hence on extreme global weather patterns was key to the CCAG 2021 report setting out the global need for more than’ just' deep and rapid emissions reduction. This remains one of our most engaged-with reports to date.

"Bob is remembered throughout the climate science community for his widespread contributions at many levels, always given with clarity, firmness, and a smile. His commitment to the actions needed to generate a manageable future for humanity was there to the end. He leaves us all with a clear legacy for real and vitally necessary actions. Our thoughts are with his family who I know were with him at the end.”
