World-leading international climate experts, the Climate Crisis Advisory Group (CCAG), today announced the appointment of pre-eminent economist, Mariana Mazzucato.

Mazzucato is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London, where she is also Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose. She advises policymakers around the world on innovation-led inclusive and sustainable growth.

She is the author of The Entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths (2013), The Value of Everything: making and taking in the global economy (2018), Mission Economy: a moonshot guide to changing capitalism (2021) and most recently The Big Con: How the Consulting Industry Weakens our Businesses, Infantilizes our Governments and Warps our Economies (2023).

Professor Mazzucato is currently also Chair of the World Health Organization's Council on the Economics of Health for All, Co-Chair of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, and Co-Chair of the Council on Urban Initiatives.

Sir David King, chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, said: “Mariana is an esteemed figure in global economic debate, leading the conversation on how governments and businesses can redirect markets towards the green transition and avoid catastrophic climate breakdown. Her values align perfectly with those of CCAG, and I am thrilled she has agreed to join us as we continue to work to forge a manageable future for humanity.”

Mariana Mazzucato, Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose (IIPP), commented: “We need new ideas, institutions, and policies to avoid catastrophic climate breakdown. But markets will not find a green direction alone. Governments have a unique ‘market-shaping’ role to play if we want to transform our economies. I am looking forward to helping CCAG advance constructive proposals and policies to tackle the urgent climate crisis.”
