The Climate Crisis Advisory Group (CCAG) have today announced the appointment of German oceanographer and climatologist Professor Stefan Rahmstorf.
Rahmstorf is the Professor of Physics of the Oceans at the University of Potsdam, where he heads the Earth System Analysis department at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany.
With expertise in ocean circulation, extreme weather and Earth system modelling, Rahmstorf previously served on the German government’s Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) from 2004 - 2013. He has also published over 140 scientific studies, with 42 in the leading journals of Nature, Science and PNAS, and has authored books including Our Threatened Oceans and the award-winning children’s book, Cloud, Winds and Weather.
Prof. Rahmstorf, said:
“I’m delighted to join the distinguished experts of CCAG at such a critical moment in the fight against the climate crisis. With devastating climate impacts escalating worldwide, the need for science to guide global decision-making has never been clearer. Science must be at the heart of policies and actions that deliver real solutions for a sustainable future. I look forward to working with the CCAG team to make the case for urgent, evidence-based global action to safeguard people and our planet’s life support system.“
Sir David King, chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, said:
“Stefan is a leading voice in climate science, and his groundbreaking work assessing the breakdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation has brought worldwide attention to a critical issue. His expertise on the role of oceans in climate change and his ability to communicate complex issues make him an invaluable addition to CCAG. It is a great honour to have him join the group and contribute to our collective fight for a better future for all.”
